Veil Fabric Calculator: Tulle, Layers and Trim
Plan one or two separate veil pieces from the lengths, widths and edge coverage you choose. Check whether each cut fits your usable tulle width, then compare fabric length and trim. The diagram keeps oval and rectangular cuts distinct, with no account and no claim to replace a pattern.

How to use it
Replace the example with your values and check units. Results update as you edit. Keep a scenario to compare, then export a file; this tool’s JSON can restore your inputs.
Worked example
Two separate pieces 100 cm wide and 200 cm long fit side by side across 298 cm of usable fabric. With 10 cm extra length, the layout needs 210 cm. A single rectangular piece of 100 × 200 cm has a 600 cm perimeter; a 10% trim reserve makes 660 cm.
Method and sources
Each tier is bounded by its own cut rectangle. If both widths fit side by side on the usable bolt, length is the longer cut; otherwise the lengths are added. Your extra length is added once. Rectangle edges are exact; oval edges use Ramanujan’s second perimeter approximation, then the chosen trim fraction and reserve. Pieces are not silently rotated.

Starting values are a fictional example. The method and limits below describe what is actually calculated.
Who it is for, and limits
A workroom estimate for separate flat pieces. A single folded two-tier veil, circular drop veil, gathering at a comb, lace placement and directional motifs need a pattern-specific layout. If a piece exceeds usable bolt width, no purchase length is shown. The preview is proportional, not a full-size template. Choose only the fraction of edge you will actually trim.
Common questions
Is a two-tier veil always two separate pieces?
Some patterns fold one long piece; this calculator models separate pieces only. Use the actual cut lengths from your chosen construction.
Why is there no fabric length for a narrow bolt?
A piece does not fit across the usable width. The tool does not invent a seam or rotate directional tulle without your pattern’s approval.
Is the oval trim result exact?
It is an approximation for an ellipse. Real cutting, gathers, lace motifs and the section you trim can change the amount needed.
Where do my inputs go?
They stay on this page. An explicit export keeps data in your chosen file; nothing is saved automatically.
Can I compare and restore a scenario?
Compare keeps up to three scenarios during this session. The JSON download lets you restore a scenario after closing.
